Safety Protocol
How ninja and NinjaChat tell you they are AI, respond when someone may be at risk of self-harm, and protect minors.

If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, in the US call or text 988 (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). Outside the US, findahelpline.com lists free local helplines. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
1. ninja and NinjaChat are AI
Every reply in NinjaChat and every message from ninja, our texting companion, is generated by artificial intelligence. ninja is not a person, and no person writes its messages.
2. How ninja tells you it is AI
ninja sends a short notice that it is an AI, not a person:
- in its first message to anyone new, including each new person who talks to it in a shared group or community channel;
- again at least every 3 hours while a conversation continues;
- whenever you ask whether you are talking to a person.
These notices are sent by the app itself, not left to the AI's judgment.
3. Crisis protocol
Messages sent to ninja, to NinjaChat chat, and to NinjaChat voice are automatically screened for signs of suicidal thoughts or self-harm. When a message shows those signs:
- the AI is instructed to respond with care and without judgment, and to encourage reaching out for help;
- the AI must never provide methods, instructions, or encouragement for suicide or self-harm;
- the reply always includes crisis resources: in the US, call or text 988 (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line); elsewhere, findahelpline.com; and in an emergency, your local emergency number.
The same rules apply to every AI model in NinjaChat, on every turn. To measure and report how often crisis resources are shown, we record that a referral was shown, without the content of the conversation.
AI is not a substitute for professional care, and NinjaChat cannot monitor conversations in real time or contact emergency services for you.
4. Minors
AI companions like ninja may not be suitable for some minors. ninja never produces sexual content and never flirts or acts as a romantic partner, with anyone. Age requirements for using NinjaChat are in our Terms of Service.
5. Reporting a concern
To report a safety concern about ninja or NinjaChat, email team@ninjachat.ai. Include the account email and the approximate time of the conversation if you can. If someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number first.
