Where does the API key come from?

Create it at ninjachat.ai under Developers → Keys. Keys are prefixed nj_sk_ and carry a monthly spending limit you control — the same key works for Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, and VS Code.

Can Cursor's agent write generated images into my repo?

Yes — generation tools return a hosted URL, and Cursor's agent downloads it into your workspace with its own file tools. Ask for the destination path explicitly and it lands exactly where the code expects it.

What does a typical frontend asset run cost?

Cheap. A hero image on z-image-turbo is $0.01, a set of three icons on recraft-v3 is $0.12, an edit pass on qwen-image-edit-plus is $0.03. estimate_cost prices any batch before the agent commits, and failed generations refund automatically.

Should I use the global or project-level mcp.json?

Global (~/.cursor/mcp.json) makes NinjaChat available in every project with one key. Use project-level .cursor/mcp.json when a repo needs its own key or you want the config checked into a team's setup docs (never commit the actual key).

Does this slow Cursor down when I'm not generating?

No. It's a remote HTTP server — nothing runs locally, no process to babysit. Cursor only opens a connection when the agent actually calls a tool.

Can the agent reuse assets it generated last week?

Yes. search_creations queries your full generation history and get_creation fetches any past output with its metadata, so the agent can pull the exact hero image it made in a previous session instead of regenerating it.

Troubleshooting

When it doesn't connect.

Server shows red / “no tools” in Cursor Settings → MCP

Check the JSON: the key must be "url" (not "command") for a remote server, and the Authorization header must include the Bearer prefix. Then hit the reload icon next to the server.

401 Unauthorized on every call

The nj_sk_ key is wrong, revoked, or pasted with whitespace. Create a fresh key at ninjachat.ai → Developers → Keys and replace the whole Bearer string.

Agent generates but never saves the file

The tools return hosted URLs; the agent must download them into the workspace. Ask explicitly: “download the result into public/hero.png” — Cursor then uses its own shell/file tools for the write.

mcp.json edits don't take effect

Project-level .cursor/mcp.json overrides the global file. Confirm which one Cursor loaded in Settings → MCP, and reload the window after edits.
